2020 Topps Fire – Review

  • Card Design:

Topps Fire has always been known for its flashy space-age appearance. That is still the
case in 2020. The design has large block letters of the player’s last name at the bottom
of each card. The backdrop is a frame with celestial designs in bright colors. Each
portrayal of the player is an action shot in vivid detail. Brightness and color are
signatures of Fire and this version does not disappoint.

  • Checklist Review:

The checklist for Topps Fire fits its mold as a Target exclusive product that fits the
packaging available in retail: fat packs, collector boxes and hangers. There are 200 cards
in the base checklist which includes 36 rookies with the RC Rookie Card designation.
Rookies to chase include Alvarez, Lux, Robert, Lewis, May, Aquino, Luzardo and Bichette.
Fire also has a sprinkling of past stars such as Mauer, Ichiro, Bagwell, Rivera, Ortiz, Sosa,
Griffey and Gwynn.

  • Collectability:

The question here is simple: is Fire truly collectible or is it another product of
opportunity? Do you go after Fire because you truly love it as a product or do you grab it
if it is the only thing on the shelf when maybe you wanted something else? Fire does
hold more value than Gallery (the Walmart exclusive) and many chase pieces of it to
complete their team or player PC’s. The ruling is Fire has some fire to it, maybe more
than the other peripheral releases.

  • Favorite Parallel/Insert Set:

Topps cannot put out a product without a sizable list of Parallels. That is true for Fire
and includes: Blue Chip, Gold Minted, Red Blaze, Flame, Onyx, Orange (numbered to
299), Green (numbered to 199), Purple (numbered to 99), Magenta (numbered to 25)
and Inferno (numbered 1 of 1). There are 6 Insert sets available to chase in Fire. Look for
Smoke and Mirrors (20-card set with Parallels), Arms Ablaze (20-card set with Parallels),
Power and Price (15-card set with Parallels), Flame Throwers (15-card set with Parallels)
and Fired Up (15-card set with Parallels).

  • Autos/Relics:

With Fire being a release available at Target, there is limited supply. And with that
limited supply comes limited resources so Fire has no Relics and has a smaller choice of
Autos. There are only five Autos sets: Fire Autographs (66-card set with Parallels), Dual
Autographs (10-card set), Triple Autographs (5-card set) and then look for Fired Up
Artist Proof Autographs and Flame Throwers Artist Proof Autographs.
