2020 Topps Gypsy Queen

Card Design:
Topps Gypsy Queen is a hybrid in the retro world. It harkens back to the days of times when cards were only available in tobacco but is not committed to one particular design like Heritage or Archives. The card design is simple but has that antique feel with the brown border and the “GQ” and Topps logos in the top corners. The player name is at the bottom with the last name, first initial and position. The team logo is in the bottom left corner and the pictures have that artsy quality like Allen and Ginter. It fills a niche for collectors with more retro that we can’t seem to get enough of. Look for Variations to the base including Armed Forces Day (15 cards), Players Weekend (30 cards) and Jackie Robinson Day (20 cards).

Checklist Review:

The base set for Gypsy Queen has 300 cards along with 20 SP’s (short prints). The set has only current players with a strong 63 rookie cards (RC’s), which is one of the higher percentages of any release out there. Some of the rookies include Lazardo, Lux, May, Alvarez, Gallen, Robert, Puk, McKay, Aquino and Bichette. The short prints are reserved for classic players from the past like Ruth, Reggie, Yaz, Clemente, Ted Williams, Koufax, Rickey Henderson and Jackie Robinson. Add to this a full complement of Parallels and there is plenty just from the base to chase.
Score 4.0/5.0

Gypsy Queen has a broad variety of cards that raise the collectability factor. Combine the base for the set builder, the Variations and Parallels for the Master set builder, the rookies for the prospectors and the Autos/Relics for the chasers and you have another product that reaches all elements of the hobby. Plus, it normally has a strong combination of retail, hobby and breakers but the pandemic has affected significantly two of those. Still there are tons of pieces from it on the secondary market. If you really want it, you can go find it on the seller sites.

Gypsy Queen does a nice job of combining the old style look of the cards with the modern chase of Autos and Relics. There are five true Autos sets: Gypsy Queen Autos (65 cards with Parallels), Fortune Teller Mini Autos (13 cards with a Black 1/1 Parallel), Jackie Robinson Day Autos (13 cards with Parallels), Chrome Box Topper Autos (13 cards with a 1/1 Parallel) and Mini Rookie Autos (13 cards with Parallels). On the Relics side, there is only one true Relics set: Power Performers Portrait Art Patch (38 cards all numbered 1/1). Finally there are five sets which combine Autos and Relics that include Pull Up Sock (3 cards all numbered to 10 with a 1/1 Black Parallel), Bases Around the League (6 cards numbered to 20 with a 1/1 Black Parallel), Autographed Garments (20 cards numbered to 50 with a 1/1 Black Parallel), Auto Lineup Cards (19 cards all 1/1) and Auto Patch Book Cards (11 cards numbered to 20 with a 1/1 Black Parallel).
Score 4.1/5.0

Topps Gypsy Queen is a product that many look forward to due to its antique feel and it’s another fun set to collect that is the next one to pop up on the calendar. In light of the pandemic, it has had renewed interest because many of the upcoming releases are delayed. That may drive some upward pricing due to slimming availability but at the same time, breaking deals can be found because it will be broken more with no new releases to replace it. Get to it while you can and scratch that collecting/chasing itch we all have right now while it is still there.
Overall Score 3.85/5.0
